Social Studies Exam; Thursday, June 19

Practice:   PLEASE NOTE: Section A of this Practice Exam does not apply to this years exam

The socials exam for the grade 9`s is a literacy exam. As such, students can`t  study for it in the traditional sense. I have told my students they should re-read Chapters 1, 4, 5 and the last section of the text called Reflections on Canadian Identity on p. 287.

You should focus your reading specifically on Immigration  in Chapter 4 and the Great Depression in chapter 5.

As well, students should look at the various pictures in these chapters and think about what they represent, their meaning and they why they make the viewer feel. What do these pictures say about Canadian identity and Canadian`s historical experience.

The exam consists of 3 parts: The first two parts require students to read passages, examine statistical information and pictures. They are then required to answer a few multiple choice questions and complete some long answer questions. The final section requires students to choose one of six pictures that have some connection to Canadian Identity. Students are required to write an explanation of how their chosen picture represents or depicts Canadian identity.

The exam is marked out of 25 with parts 1 and 2 being worth 10 marks each and part 3 worth 5.

This week I will give students some sample questions to work on in class or at home. If you have any questions please drop me a line.

Hope this helps.

David

9-5 Finish the chart and the questions at the end of the chart. Due Wednesday, Oct 16, Day 2
Monday, September, 30, 2013

We are now working on chapter 3: Canada's People. We has discussed the concepts of Urban and Rural, Population distribution and Population Density, Site and Situation and Mega-Cities. We are now watching a really gross but really educational documentary video on 14th century London. It explores the day to day problems a city like London had at that time. In class discussions I point out the problems of London today bear a resemblance to the problems 14 century Londoners had. (IE: sewerage, traffic, garbage collection, overcrowding, crime  etc.)

Students have been assigned a reading worksheet on Pp. 42-51. We have reviewed these questions in class.
